The castle is Alek's hiding place at the beginning of the Great War. It was prepared by Alek's father, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, to keep his son safe during the war.
In the series[]
Alek arrives at the castle in the Stormwalker with Volger, Klopp, Hoffman, and Bauer. They plan to hide there during the war, but they are quickly interrupted by the Leviathan crashing near the castle.
After Alek is captured by the Leviathan's crew, he is able to leave by promising to bring back food from the castle's stores. Deryn and Dr. Barlow return with Alek and Volger and stay the night in the castle.
Alek and his men are forced to leave the castle because the Germans who are looking for the Leviathan are approaching it.
